Birdsong, Blossoms, and a Runny Nose: A Gentle Guide to Easing Hay Fever with Homeopathy

Spring is here, and with it comes the cheerful chorus of birds singing—a beautiful reminder of the season’s hope. But for many, especially the sensitive souls, the arrival of spring also brings a sense of dread. It’s not the season itself, but the sneezing, itchy eyes, foggy head, and fatigue that can come with it.

These are some of my favourite homeopathic remedies and gentle tips that I’ve seen help again and again-for adults and children, especially the more sensitive among us.

Understanding Hay Fever with Compassion
My dear mum struggled with seasonal allergies for years. For her, it started with a foggy head and constant sneezing, sometimes lasting from February right through to August. We live in an area surrounded by bright yellow rapeseed fields—beautiful to look at, but overwhelming for her system at that time.
She eventually saw a homeopath, who helped her to explore her allergy symptoms more deeply and together they discovered a connection with the rapeseed itself.
My Mum was given a homeopathic remedy made from rapeseed (Rapeseed 30c). This is a method called isopathy*, where the remedy is made from the very thing causing the problem.
A few gentle doses later, she was no longer reacting to the fields she once dreaded. It felt like magic—but really, it was her body being reminded that it was safe.

Today, sensitivities are rarely straightforward. Many people’s systems are on constant alert—from stress, pollution, trauma, or inherited tendencies.
The goal of homeopathy isn’t just to suppress symptoms, but to soothe the alarms and rebuild resilience from within.

Common Hay Fever Symptoms
For most, hay fever includes:
• Sneezing
• Itchy, dry, or burning nose, eyes, and throat
• Streaming eyes or a blocked nose
And sometimes:
• Fatigue, headaches, insomnia, sore throat
• Sinusitis, coughs, asthma, or even bronchitis
In the UK, GPs no longer prescribe medication for mild hay fever—so many families are left reaching for over-the-counter antihistamines or steroid sprays. But not everyone feels comfortable with daily pharmaceuticals, especially for children. That’s where homeopathy can offer a gentle, effective and empowering alternative.

Home Prescribing: Start with Listening and Noticing
Before choosing a remedy, it can really help to pause and gently notice (or ask):
• Where is most of the discomfort? Nose, chest, throat, eyes?
• Is there any discharge? What’s its colour or texture?
• What are the sensations (dryness, burning, itching)?
• What time of day is it better or worse?
• What else makes symptoms feel better or worse?
• What is the most unbearable symptom and why?
These clues can guide you to a matching remedy.
But if symptoms are muddled or vague, a tissue salt (or one of the combination remedies below) is the best place to begin.

Top Tissue Salt for Hay Fever Relief
Nat Mur 6x
A go-to for both dry, sore, scratchy hay fever and the watery, streaming kind. Especially useful when there’s a headache, fatigue, or a sense of emotional flatness.
Dosage:
2 pills every 10–15 minutes during acute symptoms, then reduce as things improve.

My Favourite Homeopathic Remedies for Hay Fever
Use a 6c, 12c or 30c potency.
Give one dose every hour for up to 3 hours during flare-ups.
If symptoms begin to improve but later relapse, repeat the remedy.
If there’s no change after 3–6 doses, look again at the other most likely options.
1. Allium Cepa – Burny, watery kind of hay fever
Eyes and nose stream like a tap, worse indoors. Nose burns and the hot discharge burns the top lip which gets red and sore. Violent sneezing. Symptoms often worse in August.
2. Euphrasia – Eye-focused hay fever
Eyes stream and burn, eyelids have the sensation of sand inside. Lots of blinking, maybe a bland nose discharge. Better cold compress, worse in sunshine.
3. Arsenicum – Restless, anxious, burny watery hay fever
Thin, burning discharges alternates with a blocked nose, and a strong need to keep moving. Red and sore eyes, nose and top lip. Worse at night.
4. Sabadilla – Super sneezy hay fever
Intense sneezing fits, itchy mouth, nose and throat, maybe a headache or chilliness. Worse freshly cut grass or smelling flowers.
5. Nux Vomica – Irritated and oversensitive hay fever
Runny nose in daytime but blocked nose at night, lots of irritability, made worse by noise, light, or smells. Itchy nose and ears.
6. Pulsatilla – Miserable, clingy hay fever
Thick yellowish discharge, weepy, needing comfort, worse in warm rooms, better outside and with cold compress. Nose runny outdoors and stuffy indoors.
Bonus: Wyethia – Super itchy hay fever
Everything itches—palate, throat, nose, sinuses, ears—and sneezing brings no relief. Mouth feels burnt. Nervy and dizzy. Worse afternoons.
